It's strikingly beautiful, perfectly engineered, and one of the most innovative designs of recent times. But what's most surprising, is that I'm referring to a hammock. That's right, a hammock, but it's not like anything you've ever seen before.

Spring has sprung, and daytime temperatures are on the rise. But in many parts of the country, including here in southern New England, the late-afternoon and evening hours turn chilly, chasing many of us back into the house. So, while looking for a way to extend the time we spend outdoors with family and friends, I began searching for an affordable, safe wood-burning fireplace. I stumbled upon Firepits.com, and boy am I ever glad. There, I found a beautiful dome-top copper fire pit (shown above) that typically sells for about $250, but was on sale for only $150.

Plenty of people want to fix up their neighborhoods. But not everyone has the time, money or volunteers to do so. In Our Back Yard, or IOBY is a New York-based micro-philanthropy nonprofit that lets people post info on projects with eco-friendly intentions—think community gardens, composting classes, and playground cleanups—and request tax-free donations to get the project done.

Want to save some money? Of course you do! Then, consider adding a chicken coop to your backyard. You’ll keep money in your pocket by harvesting your own eggs and using chicken waste as fertilizer.
